Skeptics (who may or may not be experts themselves) ask hard questions of other experts, pushing them to explain their thinking and respond to alternative lines of reasoning in ways that force them to improve the quality of their analyses and explanations. Although a common refrain, particularly among progressives during COVID was "trust the science," the very nature of science is based on skepticism, raising and testing alternative hypotheses to determine which one(s) best fit the evidence observed. So skeptics push scientists and people who rely on science to be sure that their analyses and explanations are as good as possible, given unavoidable levels of uncertainty in most scientific endeavors.
