Builds Mutually Supportive Integrative Relationships

2. Intractable Conflict Threat and Opportunity
Conflict is natural and unavoidable in all relationships, organizations, and societal overall. If it is handled badly, as we have argued previously, it damages or destroys relationships. But if it is handled constructively, it can strengthen relationships by helping people understand each other better, work together better, and fulfill each person's or organization's needs simultaneously. Put another way, Guy often says that "conflict is the engine of social learning." If it weren't for conflict, we'd continue doing things the same way, even if that way isn't optimal, or even if it hurts one or more people or groups. Constructively handled conflict results in fewer (perhaps even no one) getting hurt, and it improves decisions, policies, and ways of doing things so that the outcomes meet the hopes and needs of all the people affected.
