Psychological Stress and Mental Illness

2. Intractable Conflict Threat and Opportunity
Most people dislike conflict. So if they are in a long-lasting conflict that seems to be unresolvable, this can lead to considerable psychological stress. It can make people depressed; it can cause them to be overly angry, fearful, or ashamed. They may lose their self esteem, and their ability to function effectively at home or at work. And all of these negative psychological effects reinforce each other, and often make the conflict even more intractable than it was before.
