People in the United States and other Western Democracies have long taken their system of government for granted. But now, democracies in the U.S. and many other countries are under struggling, under threat from both internal and external attacks. If we are to continue to enjoy the prosperity and freedom that Western liberal democracies have created, we must pay much more attention these threats, as well as to the shortcomings of our governance systems that make them vulnerable. Rather than decrying the shortcomings and turning, instead, to some form of authoritarian governance (thinking that might be better), we should be working to strengthen our democracies so that they do a better job of delivering on their promise of a better life for all, while making them less vulnerable to attack.
