The New Beyond Intractability is organizing a Challenge-oriented, Large-scale, Long-term, Learning (CL3) Community. Through this community, we hope users from myriad backgrounds--civilian government, IGOs and NGOs, business, and the military--from all over the world--will join together to discuss and expand the ideas presented here. By doing so, we will be able to work together to improve the knowledge base, while simultaneously learning how to better address intractable conflict and governance problems at international, national, and local levels.

Destructive conflict dynamics associated with intractable conflicts routinely undermine good governance and society's problem solving ability as countless stories attest. We must learn how to more constructively handle such conflicts if we are to be able to successfully analyze problems, develop and assess options for addressing those problems, and, finally, select, implement, and evaluate the most effective, equitable, and efficient solutions. In addressing intractable conflict, the CL3 Community focuses on improving our ability to handle nine often unmet challenges:
-
Improving Security
-
Promoting Cooperative Relationships
-
Assuring Efficiency and Effectiveness
More about the challenges...

Human society has been struggling with these challenges for millennia. While great progress has been made, the difficulties that remain are enormously challenging and require new approaches capable of dealing with complex psychological, economic, social, and political issues. A number of principles are key to success. More...

In addition to sorting articles by challenge, we have also sorted them into four user-group "portals." While there is overlap, each of these portals presents information we think is likely to be of interest to different user groups. The four portals are:
-
Education -- with easy access to basic, "prerequisite" knowledge on the nine challenges for students and teachers
-
Practice -- with practical advice for those actually struggling to deal with these challenges in practical roles, and
-
Research and Development -- with a window into the latest efforts to advance the frontier of the conflict and governance fields.
-
News and Features -- The "Chronicle" is a frequently-updated page with current news, analysis, and innovative responses designed to interest all users.
