Issues

Following the escalation of hostilities from December 2008 - January 2009 the UN and the Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority (EQA) requested an environmental assessment of the Gaza strip. UN officials studied environmental damage that was caused or exacerbated by the recent escalation of hostilities. This report demonstrates that the environment also suffers from long and/or intense periods of violence as shown in the damage found in the Gaza strip.

The war-torn situation in Darfur is taking a devastating toll on the environment and, in turn, Sudanese people.

The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economic Research evaluates global household wealth distribution, concluding that it is lowest where it is needed most, and this trend is likely to get worse, not better, in the future.
