Using Beyond Intractability Resources
Beyond Intractability resources are available for general use in accordance with the following principles. Our goal is to create an open-source version of the field's principal ideas.
- Anyone can freely link to any Beyond Intractability resource.
- Short-term (less than 4 months or one semester) reprint rights are royalty-free, provided that the work is fully cited and the text is not altered. However, we do ask users for a small, voluntary contribution to help maintain the system. (See below for contribution guidelines.)
- The materials may not be sold for profit, though they can be used in training materials that are sold as part of a fee-for-service training program. (See below for contribution guidelines.)
- Liberal rights to extensively quote Beyond Intractability resources are also granted. Quoted sections must be presented in their original form, and must be clearly cited. Unless a specific exemption is granted, the resulting "composite" materials must be made freely available through the Beyond Intractability site. (We can handle the posting of such materials.)
- Short quotations that fall within the standard, fair use guidelines are, of course, acceptable.
Contribution Request / Guidelines
Established with funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation's now-discontinued Conflict Resolution Program, Beyond Intractability is now actively seeking funding to maintain, operate, and further develop the system. More specifically, we are seeking support from:
-
Students and General Readers: We ask people who use the system (instead of a text or other conflict-related book) to contribute 10% to 20% of what they otherwise would have expected to pay for a conventional publication. For example, students who would have normally expected to pay $50 for a text are asked to contribute $5-$10. This can be done by using a credit card to make a tax-deductable contribution to our account with the University of Colorado Foundation (please click on the "Make a Gift Online" button below). You can also make a contribution by check or money order, made out to the Conflict Research Consortium and sent to:

USA -
Teachers and Trainers: If teachers or trainers wish to reprint materials in a workbook or "reader", we ask that they (or their students) contribute $0.50-$1.00/document/person, as long as such a donation does not create a hardship for the teachers or the students. For example, if five documents (i.e., essays, user guides, checklists, etc.) are used in a workbook, the trainers are asked to contribute $2.50-$5.00/student to help us keep the system up and operating. (The range is suggested because some documents are short, while others are long. Our goal is to charge about 10-20% of what is ordinarily charged by "real publishers" for royalties.) If your organization might be interested in supporting such work, please let us know and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information about these ideas. Contact the Conflict Information Consortium for more information.
- Wholesale Conflict Information Services: For educational and training organizations, we will develop highly customized versions of the Beyond Intractability knowledge base, which provide students and training program participants with continuing online access to an attractive array of supplemental, follow-on resources.
